Syria's Water Crisis

Restoring Clean Water Access

The Background: Christian communities in Al-Hassaka, Northeast Syria, are on the verge of displacement due to a severe water crisis. The region, historically known for its agricultural prosperity, is suffering from drought and worsening water shortages, exacerbated by Turkey’s control of the Alouk water station. This disruption, in place since 2019, has left over 1.2 million people without access to clean water. Having already been weakened by war and persecution, many Christian families now face the heartbreaking choice of leaving their homes due to the lack of accessible clean water.

The Solution: Shai Fund, in collaboration with partners on the ground is stepping in to provide urgent relief. Through a six-month project, we are delivering clean water daily to over 5,000 Christian households. By transporting 2,000 liters of potable water per day from three wells in the nearby Khabur Valley, families receive the clean water they desperately need to stay healthy and remain in their homes. Additionally, solar panels are being installed to power the wells, ensuring a sustainable water supply even after the project ends.

The Impact: This effort to restore water supply is not only addressing the immediate crisis but also empowering Christian communities with the resources they need to stay in the region. By ensuring access to safe drinking water, we are protecting these communities from the risks of waterborne diseases and providing them with the hope and stability needed to continue their lives in Al-Hassaka. Through the use of solar-powered wells to address the crisis, Shai Fund is also creating long-term resilience in a region facing political and environmental challenges.

This project would not be possible without our generous supporters who enable Shai Fund to bring vital solutions to communities in danger of displacement.
